What Movies Make You Ignore Everything Else? | by a bunch of people | The Awl
Legends of the Fall: I’ve bailed on plans with friends multiple times when I’ve caught a glimpse of Samuel and Susannah playing tennis on that grass court and known I was now in(side) for the long haul. The only time I don’t stop is if I’ve gotten there AFTER Colonel Ludlow’s legendary chalkboard-swinging “AARGGSSCRRWWWUUJMM” scene, because if you’ve missed that one then what’s the point?
A League of Their Own: Someday I am going to produce a 10,000-word chapbook on why this is one of the (if not THE) greatest sports movies ever. And it’s worth watching all the way ‘til the end because the old lady casting is so completely sublime. I’d actually love to see someone do a side-by-side of each actress in, say, 15 years with her League of Their Own flash-forward counterpart. I feel like Madonna may have actually appeared in both roles.
Armageddon: And it doesn’t matter if I watch all 151 minutes or just the last ten, you can bet I will be choking back tears. (Also, I just went to IMDB to look up how many minutes the movie is—don’t worry, I’m not THAT much of a freak—and saw that it’s playing this [past] Saturday on FX. Setting my DVR now!)
Co-sign, but adding to the Kurt Anderson/Allison Benedikt/Michael Idov parade for Groundhog Day. What’s yours?
Legends of the Fall, really? That shit is so over-the-top depressing. I’ve only seen it twice, but still think that was way too many times.

I miss my room in college that was similar to this (angled ceiling, low bed, book piles).

In May of 1891, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was on his way to Niagara Falls when, changing trains in Utica, he composed a letter to his brother, Modest, that read in part: “ginger bread and toy soldiers have started dancing in my head.”
These images were to become the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” part of The Nutcracker, one of the most familiar works by the Russian composer, who was going to see Niagara Falls—then considered one of the Wonders of the World—at the end of a 20-day stay in the United States.
For Gino Francesconi, those 20 days are a door between the past and present of American culture, and the relationship between European and American culture. To him, it began with Carnegie Hall, where he is the gatekeeper of history.

Game of Thrones: Always Support The Bottom
When Campfire’s Steve Coulson set out to create an immersive experience around the HBO production of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones, he faced a now-familiar problem: how to simultaneously generate buzz for the show, introduce the story to a new audience, and provide a deeper level of engagement for fans of the book. In this case, the task was complicated by the fact that HBO audiences weren’t expecting a fantasy series and that Martin fans were fiercely protective of his work. At a stellar presentation at last week’s Transmedia NYC Meetup, he explained how he went about it.
Woo-hoo! More meetup coverage! #storycode

I don’t think I can Tumbl anything better than that sloth video …
Celebrities, they’re just like us! I mean… doesn’t everyone totally lose their mind when presented with a sloth on their birthday?
This video pretty much made my entire day.
